Why Price Per Unit Beats Sticker Price
A 750ml bottle at $4.50 and a 1.2-litre bottle at $6.80 sit on the same shelf. The larger one costs more, but its unit price is $5.67 per litre against $6.00 for the smaller bottle. Without the per-unit figure, most people default to whichever sticker price feels lower — and often pick the worse deal. Retailers know this: odd sizing, bundle pricing, and shrinkflation all exploit the gap between what a package costs and what its contents cost.
Unit pricing is legally required on shelf labels in several countries, but the font is small, the placement varies, and online shops frequently omit it. Running the comparison yourself takes the guesswork out entirely.
Choosing the Right Unit
Consistency matters more than the specific unit. If you are comparing two bags of rice, use grams or kilograms — not one in ounces and the other in pounds.
